Apple’s iPhone 17 Event: Our Live Updates and Takeaways

You can count on Apple to offer the standard lineup of iPhones: the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Max. But instead of a Plus version, the company is expected to announce an all-new model: the iPhone 17 Air. As the name suggests, it’s expected to have an ultrathin, lightweight frame measuring 5.5 millimeters. MacRumors points out that this would make it around 30% thinner than last year’s iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.

According to a Bloomberg report, the iPhone 17 Air might have a 6.6-inch display with support for ProMotion, as well as a standard USB-C port, and it will be powered by the same A19 processor as the standard iPhone 17. To maintain the thin design, it’s also likely to include the same C1 chip featured in Apple’s entry-level iPhone 16e, along with an in-house Wi-Fi chip. In addition, the thinner design may allow for only a single 48-megapixel rear camera lens, along with a Camera Control button.

As with Apple’s iPad Air and MacBook Air categories, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be an option for people who want an iPhone that’s more high-end than the standard model but don’t necessarily need the boost in performance, larger screen size, or fancier cameras that the pricer Pro versions offer. It’s likely to be priced accordingly, between the standard and Pro models.
