The Best Sweatshirts and Sweatpants of 2025
Unisex, men’s, and women’s
The oversize Alo Accolade Sweatpant (men’s, women’s) and even-roomier Accolade Crew Neck Pullover (men’s, women’s) are made from soft, plush fleece, but they run very large. None of our testers liked the fit of these pieces (or the branding, which was more noticeable on the top).
The unisex Everybody.World Trash Sweatpants and Trash Crewneck are made from 100% reclaimed-waste cotton. Our testers liked the classic fits, but most of us didn’t enjoy the feel of the heavyweight fleece, which is especially thick and starchy.
We wanted to love the Naadam Off-Duty Cashmere Jogger (men’s, women’s) and Off-Duty Cashmere Hoodie (men’s, women’s). These pieces are more affordable than our Naked Cashmere sweatsuit pick, but they’re far less luxurious. “The pants especially felt itchy, and I didn’t love the slim, tapered cut,” groused a tester.
Women’s
The Abercrombie & Fitch Essential Sunday Sweatpant is a super-soft, nicely oversize fleece style. When we paired it with the Essential Vintage Sunday Half Zip, however, the look took a nosedive. One tester summed it up perfectly: “You know when your friend’s dad notices that you’re shivering and runs inside to grab something from the hall closet? That’s this sweatshirt.”
The American Giant Women’s Classic Full Zip hoodie and Women’s Classic Sweatpant are made from hefty, high-quality fleece. The men’s version is worth considering, but our female testers found this set’s material awkward and bulky. “I can’t fold over the waistband of the sweatpants, which is a dealbreaker,” said one.
The Great’s The College Sweatshirt (relaxed, with a raglan sleeve) and The Stadium Sweatpant (slouchy, with a dropped crotch) are made with a terry material that feels light, comfy, and very broken-in: At first glance, I thought the (intentional) slit in one cuff was a genuine tear. For a similar vibe — at a much better price — go with our Buck Mason picks.
We liked the plush, substantial fleece of the Lululemon Scuba Midrise Oversize Jogger, but it’s similar to our Aritzia pick, which is less expensive. The matching Scuba Oversize Half Zip Hoodie, a boxy cropped style, felt a little over-designed.
The pop-over-style Negative Waffle Knit Pullover and Waffle Knit Jogger are both made from a cushiony, breathable waffle-knit cotton fabric that’s smooth on the inside. The proportions looked schlumpy on our testers: “They fit more like ski long johns than sweats,” said one.
We tried the Nike Sportswear Phoenix Fleece Women’s Over-Oversized Crew-Neck Sweatshirt and Women’s High Waisted Oversized Sweatpants. Though the exterior finish is sleeker than that of our men’s Nike’s Club Fleece picks, after a single laundering, the sweatpants emerged with noticeable pilling and an unravelling drawstring.
The Set Active Lightweight Sweats Classic Crewneck and Classic Pocket Sweatpants are made from a very lightweight French terry that we found was a bit too insubstantial. “It feels like a cheap towel,” remarked a tester.
We tested a few styles from Varley: The Hawley Half Zip Sweat, The Cargo Pant, and The Slim Cuff Pant. The fabric is ultra-smooth, but it has a distinctly synthetic feel (it’s a blend of viscose, polyester, and elastane). We also wished the pants were longer: The 27.5-inch inseam hit around the ankle on me (5-foot-6).
The Vuori Halo Essential Wide Leg Pant and Halo Performance Hoodie 2.0 are both made from a stretchy polyester-elastane jersey that’s lightweight and buttery-soft. But it felt too thin and slippery for these pieces to qualify as “sweats.”
Men’s
We’d heard raves about the low-priced Hanes EcoSmart Fleece Hoodie Sweatshirt and EcoSmart Jogger Sweatpants. Alas, these sweats felt disappointingly cheap, thin, and flimsy. We think the similarly priced Comfort Colors sweats are a better inexpensive option.
I found the Lululemon Smooth Spacer Classic-Fit Pullover Hoodie and Smooth Spacer Jogger instantly off-putting. The fabric (a polyester-modal-elastane blend) has a technical-feeling slickness that reminded me of neoprene.
When we tried Naked Cashmere’s Philip Quarter Zip Cashmere Sweater and Kevin Cashmere Jogger, we were surprised at how different they were from our luxe women’s Naked Cashmere sweatsuit pick: The tighter knit felt less cushiony and slightly rough.
