The trinket dishes we tested come in a range of materials, including wood, leather, metal, and ceramic. Here are some of them. Dorie Chevlen/NYT Wirecutter. Dorie Chevlen/NYT Wirecutter.

The ideal trinket tray depends on where it will live and what it will hold. A metal tray will fare well with matchbooks and hair elastics, yet it could become scratched if it’s housing jewelry or keys. A wooden dish can live its best life in most rooms, but it can warp or crack if it’s kept in a humid bathroom. With all of this in mind, we looked at more than 100 trinket dishes, and we rounded up models featuring different materials, styles, prices, and sizes. After putting together a list of 61 promising catchalls, we called in 30 to carefully inspect.

We lived with those trinket trays for a few days to a few weeks, using them to store a range of everyday objects, such as bobby pins, matches, jewelry, keys, and glasses. And we took note of whether they wobbled, scratched, or made loud sounds when we filled them.

None of the trays we tested were outright faulty. Yet some of them had particularly exquisite design details, were impressively versatile, or just felt special to hold. These are the ones that became picks in this guide.
