Based on overall quality, craftsmanship, and comfort, The Armoury’s First Class High-twist Wool Model 3A Suit was the best one I tested. This slim-cut, classically tailored suit feels just right: For me, slipping on the jacket was like putting a key into a lock.
The medium-weight, high-twist wool breathes easily and doesn’t wrinkle much, so this suit is ideal for travel and most weather. And if you’re able to get to one of the stores, in New York City or Hong Kong, The Armoury’s knowledgeable salespeople will guide you through your suiting journey with an expert hand.
This is a next-level suit, with a price to match. The Armoury’s in-house suits are largely Italian-influenced: softly structured, with lightweight canvassing and no shoulder padding. The Model 3A — the third suit The Armoury developed — is the brand’s best-selling suit.
It elicits a “Wow, nice suit!” reaction from others. I had the Model 3A tweaked by The Armoury’s tailor. After a few adjustments to the jacket (sleeve length and waist) and trousers (waist and hem; they come unfinished), the Model 3A looked downright bespoke, which is incredibly rare for an off-the-rack suit.
The jacket’s wide lapels and soft, slightly extended shoulders are flattering. And the longer length and low buttoning point elongate the torso and create a symmetrical hourglass silhouette.
The jacket and pants can work well on their own. This suit would be right at home in an office, but due to the soft tailoring, it’s casual enough that you can wear both pieces separately. (The jacket is sold á la carte as the Model 3 sport coat, in various fabrics and patterns.)
The tailoring is absolute perfection. This suit is designed by The Armoury and made in Osaka, Japan, by renowned tailor Ring Jacket. The collar, gorge line (the seam where the collar meets the lapel), armholes, sleeve openings, and other jacket parts are sewn by hand. So the pieces have more ease and slack to them than garments done entirely by machine.
Throughout the manufacturing process, the garments are hand-pressed (ironed), allowing the tailor to essentially mold the fabric. And this helps the jacket better conform to your body over time.
The jacket has a full canvas, made of a cotton-wool material, and it’s quarter-lined. It drapes effortlessly.

The medium-weight wool travels well. The suit I tested is made from 2-ply “First Class” high-twist virgin wool from Piacenza, Italy. The weave is remarkably breathable: If you hold the jacket up to light, you can basically see through it, but on the body it’s opaque.
Depending on the season, the Model 3A also comes in a wool-mohair blend, linen, and a linen-wool blend.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- For those with thicker thighs, the pants might be slightly slim.
- The jacket is designed long and intended to cover the seat, but it may be too long for some.
