Why it’s great
It’s surprisingly versatile. With its deep blue ceramic base and natural jute shade, the Mitzi Enya lamp initially looks like it belongs in a beach house exclusively. But the more time we spent with it, the more we realized it could easily blend into a variety of decor aesthetics — from an artist’s cabin to a boho studio apartment. (The jute gives off a faint grassy scent that I liked, but others might find off-putting. This is common with jute, and it will likely fade over time.)
The upward light is diffused. A round shade topper, which is also jute, is held in place by a circle of brass topped with a matching finial. This prevents the bulb from glaring into your eye if you’re standing directly above the Enya lamp, and it keeps the lamp from casting very much upward light. So this lamp is best suited for rooms where you’re looking to add some soothing ambiance.
It takes up space (in a good way). The Enya lamp has a 9-inch diameter base at its widest point, so it won’t appear dwarfed sitting on a larger surface. That width also provides a lot of stability, making the lamp a good option for high-traffic surfaces, including entryway tables.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
Cats might shred the shade. The jute on the Enya’s shade looks and feels like sisal, the material used for scratching posts, and we’re concerned cats might try to claw at it. While we didn’t experience this during our in-office testing, I know my cats would find it irresistible.
The bulb is pretty visible. The fibers on the shade are wound around the frame, instead of woven, and that means there are thin gaps between each strand. So the bulb is much more visible, making it far more suited for areas where you want low, warm, ambient light.
There’s no warranty. At this price point, a lamp should have some sort of guarantee against issues.
