The 13 Best Throw Blankets of 2025

Our picks include throws made of plain wool, as well as merino wool, cashmere, and alpaca — each with a different drape and feel. Some wool is washable, but it can shrink or deform, even if it’s washed with care. If the label says the throw should be dry-cleaned only, then running it through the washer and dryer might not be worth the risk; it could void any return policy or warranty, and wool isn’t cheap.

A throwback throw: Herman Miller Girard Throw

Why it’s great

It has a pedigree. The Herman Miller Girard Throw is made in the US by Pendleton, the classic American brand that has produced wool blankets for more than a century. The design has history, too: Alexander Girard, then director of design for Herman Miller’s textile department, first created this throw in 1965 as part of a campaign for Braniff International Airways.

It has all the fuzzy glory you’d expect from a brushed-wool throw. And yet the small amount of cotton it contains is actually what makes it softer and less scratchy. That cotton also adds just enough weight to give the throw a lovely drape. Sitting under it in an armchair in my office, I daydreamed that I was on a luxurious first-class flight in the 1960s.

There are few color choices, but they’re all fetching. The Girard comes in four plaid-like geometric designs — two classic neutrals and two straight-from-the-1960s mod brights (one of which I tested in 2025 and loved).

Flaws but not dealbreakers

It’s dry-clean-only. Despite this throw’s cotton content, it’s best to keep it out of the washer and dryer.

It loves lint. Keep a lint roller on hand because this throw will collect any and all of it.

Luxe lambswool: Brooklinen Pure Wool Throw

Why it’s great

It’s deliciously textured yet still soft. Most all-wool throws have a scratchiness to them, but the Brooklinen Pure Wool Throw Blanket is the softest one we’ve tried. That’s because it’s made of lambswool, which tends to have a gentler texture than other wools. It’s also thicker and warmer than any other wool throw we recommend.

It’s neutral and versatile. When the blanket’s folded over a couch or chair, its subtle flecked coloring looks cozy and gorgeous. It comes in only two colors (grayish-beige and beige), but they go with everything.

It’s durable. We’ve been recommending the Broolinen Pure Wool Throw since 2018, and it holds up. Other than a piece of fringe that my dog ate, the original tester still looks new. Some of my co-workers have washed cat puke off of theirs. Some others who like to live on the edge have thrown it in the washer and dryer (it’s technically dry-clean-only). And all of them report that this blanket has survived various misadventures with only minor pilling.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

It will likely pill. Several staffers who own the Brooklinen throw said they noticed some pilling after about a year. Some admitted to throwing theirs in the wash, which can speed up pilling, but normal wear-and-tear will also eventually cause it. As with most wool throws, with this one, dry-cleaning is probably the best way to keep it looking good.

A classic in a cashmere blend: Garnet Hill Wool & Cashmere Throw

Why it’s great

It’s chic and buttery-soft. The crowd-pleasing Garnet Hill Wool & Cashmere Throw was one of the most popular ones in our testing. Certified by the Sustainable Fibre Alliance (SFA), this throw looks effortless tossed over a chair, and it feels softly fluffed.

It’s toasty-warm. The Wool & Cashmere Throw is light, yet it’s cozy to wrap up in, almost like a shawl. For such a slim throw, it provides a lot of warmth. One of our testers noted that “it’s thin but doesn’t feel flimsy.”

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Don’t even think about throwing it in the wash. In testing, I often wash throws at home to see what will happen — even if they’re labeled dry-clean-only. But because of the hint of delicate cashmere in this throw, I wouldn’t risk machine-washing it. Garnet Hill stopped offering a lifetime guarantee in 2022, but it still has a one-year-warranty and a 90-day return policy for new, unused items.

A toasty lap blanket: Aran Merino Aran Patchwork Throw

Why it’s great

It’s a cozy knit sweater in blanket form. The Aran Merino Aran Patchwork Throw is made in Ireland of thick merino wool, and it comes in more than a dozen colors, from a natural white to some deeply saturated tones. I bought my mother a green one for Christmas in 2022, and she still loves it.

It works as a lap blanket. One of our testers, a 74-year-old woman, marked this throw as her favorite because it was the smallest of our picks. She said she preferred lounging in a chair to lying on a couch, since it’s easier to stand up, so she didn’t want a throw with full-body coverage. She also appreciated that it wasn’t slippery, as fleece can be, so it stayed put instead of sliding to the floor (bending over was difficult for her). I loved using it while working from an armchair on a chilly day; it kept me toasty from the chest down and left my hands free to use my laptop.

It’s warm but not heavy. Our senior tester also noted that the Aran blanket weighed less than the cotton throws she tried, so it was easier to maneuver even with limited strength and mobility.

You can hand-wash it. Unlike our other wool throws, which are dry-clean-only, the Aran throw can be hand-washed and air-dried at home.

Shipping is expensive. There’s a $35 flat rate for US orders. However, even with the shipping, at its current price (it’s been on a perpetual sale since at least 2021), this throw is still less expensive than the all-wool Brooklinen and Garnet Hill picks.

It’s the least-soft wool throw on our list. Compared with our other wool picks (which are napped to give them a fuzzy-soft surface), the Aran throw has a slightly rougher surface, similar to a chunky fisherman sweater.

Plaids galore, in recycled wool: The Tartan Blanket Co. Recycled Wool Blanket

Why it’s great

It’s made by a family-owned Scottish company. The Tartan Blanket Co.’s Recycled Wool Blanket features traditional tartan patterns with an old-country-house feel, like something straight out of the castle from The Traitors. But this warm blanket also comes in modern checks, plaids, and stripes, in cheerful, bright colors.

The company abides by strict social and environmental standards. This throw is made with 70% recycled wool, recovered from old clothes, and 30% recycled clothing fibers (including polyester). The company also became a certified B Corp in 2023; you can read more details on its impact page.

It’s the rare machine-washable wool throw. But you’ve got to follow the very detailed care instructions (including the use of wool soap).

It’s available in several sizes. It comes in small, large, and extra-large, in both classic tartans and their brighter colors. The recycled wool is also available in a small minus the fringe and a regular-size picnic blanket, and there’s also a children’s size in herringbone.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The feel of this throw isn’t for everyone. One of our testers told us this throw was too thin and that the fabric seemed too much like craft-store felt. I’ve seen this response to wool/synthetic blends before — some people are fine with the texture, but those who dislike it really dislike it.

Luxurious alpaca: Area Home Liam Throw

Why it’s great

It looks and feels like a luxury throw from a designer’s boutique. And that’s because it is. Anki Spets, owner and designer of Area Home, which she founded in 1990, has been selling the Area Home Liam Throw throw for years. (I interviewed her for our guide to bed blankets). This also is our most expensive pick. It’s made with baby alpaca wool, which feels silky-soft like cashmere but is more durable. It’s whisper-thin and drapes like a shawl, with a subtle weave pattern that gives it a beautiful textured look and a slight luster.

It’s warmer than it looks. The Liam Throw may be thin and delicate, but it’s as warm as many thicker wool throws I’ve tested.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The Liam Throw is very thin. Some of our testers preferred the feel and weight of thicker, fuzzier wool throws. Area Home offers 30-day returns for unused items if you find that the Liam Throw is too thin for you.
